STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION
Zinc is a ubiquitous trace element in the human body, acting as a cofactor for more than 300 enzymes. DNA synthesis, RNA transcription, cell division, protein synthesis and digestion are all dependent on the presence of Zinc. The DNA structural motif known as a Zinc finger is a site of transcriptional regulation, with Zinc-binding proteins involved in the genetic expression of various biological compounds.

Zinc metalloenzymes catalyze approximately 50 important biochemical reactions and are a part of all classes of enzymes, including oxidoreductases, transferases, hydrolases, lyases, isomerases, and ligases. They can function catalytically by the binding of the substrate directly to Zinc or a Zinc-hydroxide ion, or structurally, with Zinc stabilizing the quaternary structure of oligomeric holoenzymes.

The precise mechanism of how Zinc affects male reproductive health is not completely understood. Zinc is required for spermatogenesis and aids in the formation of male sex hormone by Leydig cells. The androgen receptor gene also contains a Zinc finger domain, necessary for the development of male external genitalia.*

Zinc is known to play a central role in the immune system. As a component of collagenase, Zinc contributes to healthy skin. Zinc is essential for cell division, assisting rapidly dividing immune cells to support the requirements of the immune system. In addition, Zinc assists in a wide range of specific immune functions, including Immunoglobulin G (IgG) production in B cells and IL-2 production in CD4+ T cells.*

CLINICAL EVIDENCE

  • In a recent double blind human study, subjects were given 45mg zinc/day for a period of 12 months. Subjects in the treated group had significantly better immune function and low oxidative stress as compared to the placebo group. (Prasad et al, 2007)
  • 20 subjects received 10 mg of zinc aspartate per day for about 48 days. Plasma zinc status and markers of protein oxidation in lymphocytes were measured before and after the trial. Zinc supplementation significantly reduced oxidative stress in cellular proteins by maintaining the expression of protective enzymes. The results of this study demonstrate the role of zinc as an antioxidant within the body. (Cabreiro et al, 2008)
